Save the Children is gravely concerned about the impact recent civic events have on children and young people, especially the nation-wide protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 in India that have turned violent in some locations.
Save the Children calls upon guardians, state administrations and the police to be especially vigilant and to ensure safety while upholding rights of children. We applaud the efforts where protests have been calm and well managed by the law agencies. Yet there are concerns on media reports of severe action on young people, including children.
Save the Children urges all stakeholders to ensure that protests are peaceful and those responsible for managing rallies, law and order, maintain calm and take every precaution to ensure the safety and well-being of children in all circumstances.
