Programme 1: Samudaya Abhivruddhi “Enhancing Community Development”

Background:
Save the Children has initiated a project to address child poverty in Vemgul village in Kolar Taluk of Karnataka through its project Samudaya Abhivruddhi – “Enhancing Community Development”.

About the Project:
The project started in 2016 and is ongoing The project has impacted the lives of many young men and women. The project aims at enhancing livelihood opportunities of community members in 20 villages from the intervention area using an integrated approach of community development. The focus will be on giving importance to education, behaviour change, vocational courses, and employment opportunities. This approach has been adopted to reduce child poverty and ensure sustainable development of the community.

Save the Children is doing this by:
  • Creating livelihood opportunities for youth, women & men entrepreneurs in targeted villages for sustainable alternative livelihood options to restrict migration
  • Building strong community-based self-help groups of youth, men and women for improved opportunities for employment/entrepreneurship, which will help in sustainable income generation
Target Groups:
Primary Beneficiaries- Youths, Adolescent boys and girls, Men (Construction Management) & Women (SHG members), and Children from schools
Secondary Beneficiaries- Teachers, School Management Committees, Panchayat members, and Government departments

Key Achievements:
  • Setting up of Sanitary Napkin Unit, run by trained SHG members and registered under the name ‘Suraksha Mahila Swayam Udyog Samasthe.’
  • 4 toilets along with one handwashing station in a school have been constructed till date
  • Housekeeping training in collaboration provided employment to 5 youths
  • Developed good rapport with key officials -Kolar Zilla Panchayat Department of Women and Child Development, Department of Health and Family Welfare, PDO-Vemgal, District Collector
  • Child Champions led the Release of Children’s Manifesto in 2018
  • Raised awareness to make India safe for women
Key Components:
  • Building women entrepreneurs by providing training on sanitary pad production
  • Awareness on WASH and Menstrual Hygiene
  • Training on construction management and production of prefabricated toilets
  • Provide skills training to youth and community members on catering & housekeeping
  • Improving WASH facilities and hygiene & sanitation practices in selected
