The only Aanganwadi worker in the village of Praharajpur, Odisha is Vijaya Lakshami Mallik. 34 years in this profession, she had not attended many skill trainings to build her capacity. Identifying this as a pressing need of numerous Aanganwadi workers in and around the area and to ensure all-round development of the children in pre-schools, Save the Children arranged a four-day training programme. Part of our project, ‘Education to Empowerment: Pillars of Learning’ this training made the Aanganwari workers aware about interactive teaching. They were also trained about the various teaching methodologies to ensure cognitive development, fine motor skill development and gross motor skill development in children.

So far this four-day training has been conducted thrice. These trainings have enabled Vijaya Lakshmi and many other Aanganwadi workers connect better with children and help them learn better. The enrollment rate of children in these pre-school have also improved. Besides the trainings, we have also improved the physical environment of Aanganwaris and provided pre-school education equipment, toys and other learning materials.
