Shabana Azmi speaks up for saving mothers this Mother’s Day

This Mothers Day actress, activist and Save the Children campaign Ambassador Shabana Azmi calls for investments in training and deploying more female health workers in India to save mothers dying in childbirth. Every year in India around 68,000 women die annually from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth.

In a new campaign message to be released online on Mothers’ Day Shabana Azmi expresses concern at the state of mothers in India saying, “This Mother’s Day is a grim reminder of thousands of mothers dying during child birth".

New report calls for more health workers to stop mothers and children dying.

India ranks 73 out of 77 middle-income countries for the “Best place to be a mother” according to a new Save the Children report. Despite progress in reducing maternal mortality and child mortality, India still ranks 1 out of 12 countries that account for two-thirds of under five and maternal deaths in the world. The report says that India must invest in female front line healthcare workers to address the shortfall of health care workers needed to end preventable maternal and child deaths. The shortfall of ASHA workers is estimated at a huge 74,000 (government norm is one Asha for 1000 population) and ANMs at 21,066 (one ANM for 5000 population in plain areas and 3000 for rural areas). We have to close the health worker gap and women have to be part of the equation to save the lives of other women and their children. The health of a woman is closely linked to her educational status and socio-economic status. Despite maternal mortality rates showing a decline in India, thousands of women are still dying every year because they cannot access the most basic health care facilities or if these are available, are of poor quality.

About the Campaign

2 million children in India die every year from easily preventable diseases. Each one leaves a heartbroken family. Which of these children have a right to survive? EVERYONE. It’s shameful and unjustifiable that in 2009 more than 9 million children will die before they reach their fifth birthday — over 20% of them in India.

India is booming, but the effects of its 9% GDP growth are not reaching its poor — and our children are suffering the consequences.

Unless we act urgently, children will continue to die for many years to come, though the
world has the knowledge and resources to save them.

Save the Children recently launched its a new drive EVERY ONE which aims at working across the world to make a big change happen faster. We’re calling for your support to help India make the 46% annual reduction in the deaths of children to meet MDG 4 by 2015.

A 5 % improvement in child mortality rates can raise economic growth by around 1% per year over the following decade.
